Homestead High School Jazz Ensemble @ 12:00pm

The Homestead Jazz Ensemble is comprised of 22 of the top student musicians in Homestead High School’s large and vibrant music program.

The Homestead Jazz Ensemble was founded in 1974 by then band director, Rory Snyder. John Burn, a Homestead Jazz Ensemble Alum, has been the director since 1991.

Throughout the past four decades, the Homestead Jazz Ensemble has continually earned high ratings at adjudicated festivals such as the CMEA Jazz Festival, the Reno Jazz Festival, and the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival. In 2009, the Homestead Jazz Ensemble performed in the Australian International Music Festival in Sydney, Australia and in 2005 the Homestead Jazz Ensemble performed in both the “Next Generation” Monterey Jazz Festival and the Kobe Jazz Festival in Kobe, Japan.

The Los Gatos High School Jazz Band is an audition-based big band comprised of students in grades 9-12. In the past 5 years, the jazz band has grown in both size and quality; in addition to performing around the Bay Area at town events, school concerts and adjudicated festivals, the group has also consistently received “unanimous superior” ratings at CMEA jazz festivals.

The jazz ensemble performs diverse styles of music such as swing, Latin, bebop, ragtime, and pop/rock/jazz fusion. Clinicians who specialize in various jazz styles will also guest lecture during the year, helping students gain a deeper understanding about the performance style. Members of this ensemble explore improvising and playing in smaller “combo” groups. Students in this ensemble typically take this class as their second music elective in addition to taking a foreign language and Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble.

Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band @ 3:00pm

Led by Director, Dillon Baiocchi and Ensemble Advisor, Eddie Mendenhall, theKuumbwa Jazz Honor Band is an all-star ensemble of high school musicians from Santa Cruz and the surrounding areas.

Having successfully auditioned, band members attend weekly rehearsals, study complex jazz theory, improvisation and arranging, and learn essential life skills such as communication, cooperation and critical thinking. The Honor Band performs at community benefits, festivals and special events, ending each school year with a concert at the renowned Kuumbwa Jazz Center.

Valley Christian Jazz Ensemble @ 12:00pm

The Valley Christian High School Jazz Program was founded in 1990 and is under the direction of Dr. Marcus Wolfe and Dr. Michael Jones.  The program features the award winning VCHS Jazz Ensemble along with other large and small jazz ensembles and improvisation classes at the High School and Junior High levels.  In 2006, members of the Jazz Ensemble were instrumental in the creation of the Valley Christian Conservatory of the Arts, the first conservatory-model training program in the Bay Area.  The Conservatory has a robust guest artist program and regularly hosts jazz artists with international reputations for concerts and workshops.  Our students have recently enjoyed master classes and workshops from Pete Escovedo, Ray Brown, Sheila E, Mark Sherman, Carl Allen, and Scott Whitfield.

In 2013 the Jazz Ensemble placed first in an international competition, The Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards, tied for first overall at the Reno Jazz Festival, and was invited to perform at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival.  They have consistently placed first or second at jazz festivals such as, Folsom, Cabrillo, Campana, Fullerton and Santa Cruz.

Three members of the Jazz Ensemble were named finalists in the 2010 Grammy Jazz Ensemble.  Graduates of the Valley Christian Jazz Ensemble have been awarded positions top college music programs in the United States including the University of North Texas, Stanford University, The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Harvard University.

The Jazz Ensemble frequently performs at top music venues in the Bay Area, including Villa Montalvo, the historic California Theatre in San Jose, and The Fairmont Hotel San Jose.  They have an annual recording session at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA and they regularly participate in many benefit concerts, including one in collaboration with UCLA Jazz Band for Global Outreach International.

San Jose Jazz High School All Stars @ 1:00pm

Led by Dr. Aaron Lington, the High School All Stars is a regional, audition-based music education program for students who are interested in the study and performance of jazz. The program includes a large ensemble and a combo. It’s designed to help students achieve a mastery of improvisation techniques while advancing their knowledge of music theory, arranging, composition, performance, and jazz history.

The Cosmo Alleycats is an emerging San Francisco dance band that brings to the stage a potent mix of vintage dance music with a dynamic, soulful delivery. The band draws from several decades of exhilarating American music spanning the eras of Swing & Big Band, Blues, 60s Soul and R&B, and Motown.

The five-piece swing jazz and retro R&B band performs regularly at both Le Colonial and Blondie’s Bar in San Francisco, a consistent favorite to audiences and dancers throughout the Bay Area. The Band also appears at concert events such as the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival and Sausalito’s Jazz & Blues by the Bay series. A professional, full-service ensemble, The Cosmo Alleycats’ diverse repertoire is well-suited for all types of events, from weddings to corporate receptions to dance parties. The talented group consists of vocalist Emily Day, pianist Noam Eisen, bassist Steve Height, drummer Mike Burns, saxophonist Pete Cornell, and trumpeter Zach Meyerowitz.

Don’t know how to dance to swing? Arrive at the beginning of the evening to learn new steps or just brush up on technique with expert dance instructors including SJZ Board member Margot Helm.

San Pedro Square Market Special Events: Join SPSM and San Jose Jazz for a live performance with Dahveed Behroozi on Friday, February 27th, 2015 @ 7:00pm in the Market Garage.

Pianist and Composer Dahveed Behroozi is a Bay Area based musician primarily devoted to the independent jazz and classical scenes. Dahveed’s playing has been described as highly expressive, lyrical and colorful by numerous publications nationwide. Originally from San Jose, he has recorded and performed as a leader, as well as a sideman with Thomas Morgan, Tim Bulkley, Billy Mintz, Dayna Stephens, Ed Neumeister, Todd Neufeld, Aaron Lington, John Shifflett, Jason Lewis, Bob Kenmotsu, Cuong Vu and Jeff Denson.  He is also an active accompanist, where he plays for singers in a wide array of idioms ranging from art songs to The American Songbook, as well as singer/songwriter material.

Dahveed studied with pianist Hans Boepple at Santa Clara University.  He received his BA in Jazz Piano from The Manhattan School of Music in 2002 where he studied under Fred Hersch.  He then received his Master’s from The Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College where he studied classical and contemporary piano literature under Ursula Oppens.

Sons of Jubal is a Silicon Valley Community Traditional Big Band composed entirely of volunteers, playing a variety of gospel, modern arrangements of hymns, contemporary praise music and traditional big band arrangements from the Big Band Era. The name “Sons of Jubal” comes from Genesis 4:21, which says Jubal is the father of all musicians. Since its inception in June 2000, Sons of Jubal has performed at a wide variety of venues.  In addition to providing great entertainment, the group’s goal is to create opportunities that involve youth in their music program.

San Pedro Square Market Special Events:  Join SPSM and the San Jose Bike Clinic for a Free Bike Skill Share workshop and tune-up in front of the Market Garage.....bring your bike and hang out with the crew!

Want to learn how to fix something on your bike? Maybe its out of sorts and could use a tune up? Bring it on down to the Bike Clinic!

We're popping up one evening a month at San Pedro Square Market. We'll be in the loading dock area, just outside the building with B2 coffee and the Garage Bar. Look for bike stands and friendly folks wearing SJBC t-shirts!

San Jose Bike Clinic is a non-profit, volunteer-run, do-it-yourself community bicycle workshop! We sell parts and shirts, and you can use our tools to fix up your bike -- and we'll help coach you through it. We are working towards establishing a permanent workshop, and subsist on donations to help us get there -- but we don't turn anybody away for lack of funds. Come check us out, and help us spread the word about our events!

David Walker and Barrelmeister Jeffers' unruly trek to Silicon Valley with 6 rare sour beers during the SF Beer Week.  There will be a collection of specialty Sour Firestone Barrelworks beers.  A blind drawing the day of the event will determine the beer to be poured at SPSM.

San Pedro Square Market Live Music:  Join SPSM and San Jose Jazz for a live performance with the Metta Quintet on Friday, February 6th, 2015 @ 7:00pm in the Market Garage.

Metta Quintet is a highly creative unit featuring some of the most acclaimed, in-demand artists on the scene today. The ensemble is as dedicated to blazing new artistic territory as it is to cultivating new audiences and fostering a greater overall awareness, understanding and appreciation of the great American jazz tradition.

In 2012, the group released Big Drum, Small World which celebrates the globalization of jazz, stylistic amalgamation and creative collaboration, featuring all-original compositions by internationally-renowned composers, including Miguel Zenon, Yosvanny Terry and Rudresh Mhanthappa.
