San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM and San Jose Jazz for a live performance with Mads Tolling, on Friday, November 8th, 2013 at 7:00pm.
Think of a distinctive jazz violinist, and only a handful of names come to mind, Regina Carter, Jean Luc De Ponty, and Mads Tolling, an internationally acclaimed violinist, violist, and composer whose fresh new voicings embrace the playful sophistication of his instrument. Tolling's love of jazz started from his childhood in Denmark; he embraced the musical interpretations of greats like Jean Luc De Ponty, and at the age of 20 he moved to the U.S. to pursue Jazz studies. Tolling graduated from Berklee College of Music summa cum laude and later became the solo violinist with the Turtle Island Quartet from 2003 to 2007. He won two Grammy awards for "Best Classical Crossover Album" with the recordings 4+Four and A Love Supreme – The Legacy of John Coltrane. As a solo artist, Tolling has received Denmark’s Sankt Annae’s Award for Musical Excellence, the Berklee Elvin Jones Award as well as grants from Queen Margaret of Denmark. He has performed with Paquito d’Rivera, Kenny Barron, Joe Lovano, Sergio and many other crossover artists.
Tolling's recent album Mads Tolling Quartet -- Celebrating Jean-Luc Ponty was recorded live at Yoshi's Oakland, and is currently available for purchase.
