San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM for a live performance with the Funktopus Funk Band on Saturday, December 13th, 2014 @ 8:00pm in the market garage.
The first echoes of Funktopus resonated from the wooden plank floors of Brian Vollbrecht's farm house in rural Petaluma, CA in September 2012. Slowly but surely, song material began to materialize from recurring weekend jam sessions between Brian (bass), Steven Ashlock (drums), Albert Shribbs (keys), and Connor Ross (guitar). After months of struggling to find a dependable female vocalist, fate (and Craig's List) brought Dee Torrent into the group as a lead vocalist who doubled on flute. The group began to gel, songs materialized more quickly, and a unique sound was created as a result of the musicians' diverse musical backgrounds and influences.
Finally, the time came to record a debut release. Just in the nick of time, Tito Granda was suction-cupped by the Funktopus to join the group as percussionist, contributing congas, tambourine, shakers, and all manner of noisemakers to the album. He immediately became a full-time band member, completing the six-person lineup. The band's self-titled EP was released on December 13, 2013, and the band played an intimate and high-energy first show at Sprenger's Taproom in Santa Rosa, CA the next day.
Blending elements of rock, reggae, psychedelia, jazz, and of course, FUNK, the band's sound continues to evolve.
