Allagash Brewing Company started in 1995, as a one-man operation in a small space on the outskirts of Portland, Maine. Founder Rob Tod had worked in a brewery setting before and recognized a void within the craft brewing movement. While both German and British styles had become prevalent throughout the U.S., the ever-creative Belgian-styles were very difficult to find. Through his travels, Tod had sampled many of these unique beers and felt that the flavors and traditions of Belgium needed to be shared with the American drinking public. He designed a small 15-barrel brewhouse, gathered the finest array of authentic raw materials and began his quest towards the production of traditional Belgian style ales. Rob sold his first batch of beer in the summer of 1995.

The first release from Allagash was Allagash White, modeled after the traditional "White" beers of Belgium. Also referred to as "wit" beers, they get their unique flavor from the use of wheat in place of barley, and the use of Curacao orange peel, coriander and other spices. Allagash combined these ingredients with their very own proprietary Belgian yeast strain to create the remarkably unique and refreshing beer that is today their flagship brand.

With the success of the first brand, Rob decided to venture further into the Belgian beer genre. He hired his first employee and soon released a second brew, Allagash Double Ale. Using the philosophy and techniques created by the Trappist Monks of Belgium centuries ago, they created this beer using seven different malts, a traditional sugar, and their own Belgian yeast strain. The result was another unique yet balanced beer crafted in the classic Belgian style.

In 2001, Rob and the Allagash crew wanted to continue to pay tribute to Belgian brewing traditions by delving into the world of cork and cage finished beers and bottle conditioning. At the time, almost no one was doing this here in the states, but Allagash knew the process was more than just a new look. Bottle conditioning is the process of adding sugar and yeast, just prior to bottling, to allow for natural carbonation of the beer. The resulting beer is softer and more complex than traditionally carbonated beers. This "live" beer also continues to develop flavors over time, enhancing the beer drinker's experience.

Today, Allagash has six year round beers in its portfolio, seven yearly releases and numerous one-offs and keg only releases. We continue to be successful by pushing the limits of beer and themselves. We have always strived to produce the finest Belgian inspired and experimental ales this side of the Atlantic. Allagash began as New England's original Belgian-Style brewery and have grown into one of the industry's most distinguished and well-respected brands.

Friday, June 5th, 2015 @ 7:00pm: Kurt Ribak Jazz

Kurt Ribach1 626x350 resized 600

Kurt Ribak (pronounced REE-bok, like the shoes) showed a penchant for finding rhythm and music where he could. Kurt’s parents were not players but lovers of music. Ancestors include a female leader of an all-male band (“Stella and her Fellas”) and Simon Rodia, the creator of the Watts Towers, a major work of folk art. When Kurt was about four years old his mother found him dancing to the sound of the dishwasher. More conventional early musical experiences included playing ‘cello and singing in the San Francisco Boys Chorus, which performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Opera. A Berkeley, CA native, Kurt attended UC Berkeley, where he continued playing classical music and played in the UC Jazz Ensembles. Kurt met pianist Greg Sankovich there and reconnected with his fellow San Francisco Boys Chorus alumnus, saxophonist Lincoln Adler. Kurt continues to play with Greg and Lincoln. After a battle with tendinitis, Kurt won scholarships to Berklee College of Music. He graduated with top honors after practicing obsessively. He also spent many hours transcribing and absorbing the styles of bassists Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, and Charles Mingus and dissecting the compositions and arrangements of Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti and R&B giant James Brown. At Berklee College of Music Kurt learned he loved composition and songwriting. His early tunes reflect a strong Thelonious Monk influence, while others reflect his love of the great bassist/composer/bandleader Charles Mingus, whose music he studied intensively at Berklee. Later tunes bring to mind Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, and the South African composer Abdullah Ibrahim. Kurt says what he’s trying for in his music is “Charles Mingus meets The Meters. They go to Duke Ellington’s house to jam, and every so often Cachao and Thelonious Monk sit in.” Kurt leads the Kurt Ribak Trio and has worked as a musician in settings ranging from circuses to sharing the stage with preachers and fire-breathing strippers. (Kurt notes these were different events.) Kurt has performed in venues ranging from Yoshi's to a club where someone stashed a loaded .45 in his bass bag. Kurt no longer plays there. In June 2012 Kurt was in an auto accident, seriously injuring his left hand and forearm. Nine operations and over a year later he is still recovering but has resumed playing between surgeries. He notes, “It’s a tough way to find out, but when I was hurt I learned how many people loved me, cared about me. They say it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a community to heal someone.” Kurt Ribak has just released his fourth recording as a leader, titled "I Got One More!" The Kurt Ribak Trio has three CDs out, all of which enjoy airplay on KCSM-FM and other jazz stations. He has led his group at venues throughout the greater Bay Area and beyond, including sold-out appearances at Yoshi’s.

Live Music: Kaye Bohler Band Saturday May 16th @ 7pm

kaye like a flower sm resized 600

San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM for a live performance with the Kaye Bohler Band on Saturday, May 16th, 2015 @ 7:00pm in the Market Plaza in downtown San Jose.

Celebrated singer/songwriter Kaye Bohler has captivated audiences from Japan to Alaska for over 25 years. Her current tour schedule finds her all over California with her popular Rhythm and Blues Band. With this ensemble, Bohler is frequently called "The White Tina Turner" for the power and authenticity this true entertainer puts out in a performance. This last summer, she stole the show in her 6th return to the Monterey Blues Festival and continues to tour the concert and festival circuit promoting her latest CD: "Like a Flower" - featuring Robben Ford.

She posses a formidable triple threat as a singer, songwriter and bandleader with four CD's now under her belt. Her latest CD: "Like A Flower" has garnered tremendous, stellar reviews even comparing her songwriting to Carole King. Every melody and lyric of this CD was crafted by Kaye. "Like a Flower" also features the most notable and seasoned veterans of the Bay Area Rhythm and Blues Sound, including: Tommy Castro, Danny Caron, Garth Webber, Sammy Varela, and Nancy Wright.

This Southern California native now calls the SF Bay area her home. Locally, Kaye can be seen spreading her vocal chops in the jazz and contemporary music genres but holds "Blues" to be the power and authenticity that drives all the material she covers. With a three octave plus vocal range, a curvaceous silhouette, and a disarming wit on stage, she engages and draws the listener in like few other performers.
