Andre Thierry: Friday, January 13th @ 7:00pm

GRAMMY Nominated, Andre Thierry is a phenomenal talent who has been capturing the attention of other musicians and music lovers since he was a toddler. Andre’s French Creole heritage is deeply rooted in Louisiana although he was born and reared in northern California. Michael Tisserand, author of The Kingdom of Zydeco, considered the definitive book on the history of Zydeco music, wrote, “In America, great migrations produce great music. Just as Delta musicians took Highway 61 to Chicago and electrified their blues, so did the Creoles and Cajuns migrate to California and establish vital dance communities. Now the California scenes rival anything back home in Louisiana, and that’s due to players like Andre Thierry, a standard bearer for the new generation. Thierry is among the best of both the West Coast and the Gulf Coast, and he combines youthful vigor with a mature appreciation for his inherited tradition.”

Andre’s story begins July 9, 1979. Born in Richmond, California to Olivia “Tee” Guillory originally from Basile, Louisiana and Gregory Thierry, originally from Jennings, Louisiana. Andre’s childhood was deeply influenced by his maternal grandparents, the late Houston Pete Pitre (Pa-Pa as they called him) from Basile, Louisiana and his loving grandmother, known to all as Mama Lena Pitre from Soileau, Louisiana.

Andre grew up experiencing the French Creole (La-La) dances his grandparents held at their church parish, St. Mark’s Catholic Church. The best Zydeco musicians Louisiana had to offer traveled to California to play at the dances and spent time at the Pitre’s house while in the area. On one such visit, the “King of Zydeco,” the late great Clifton Chenier, grabbed three-year old Andre by the arms and deemed him a future accordion player. From then on, Andre’s Pa-Pa, Houston Pete, encouraged the young Andre to play the accordion.

Andre captivated by Clifton Chenier, he began teaching himself to play by listening to Clifton’s music. Andre demonstrated an innate musical ability and his skill quickly grew. Andre played his first song, Willis Prudhomme’s version of “Give’m Cornbread” in the backyard of his grandparent’s home, for his delighted family. He soon began playing Clifton Chenier’s music on stages all over Northern California.

His grandparents continued to host Louisiana musicians and this exposure to his heritage allowed him to develop his love for, and mastery of, traditional French Creole music. By age twelve, with the help of his mother, Andre formed his own band, “Zydeco Magic.” Andre’s repertoire grew by leaps and bounds as he was regularly invited to play with visiting bands, such as the late John Delafose, his son, Geno Delafose, and many local Zydeco and Cajun bands, including the late Danny Poullard (California Cajun Orchestra).

Andre is a virtuoso on all the accordion types, single row, double row, triple row and piano key. He effortlessly moves across types to deliver an energetic two-step, hard-driving blues or a blend that is his own alternative Creole sound. Although Andre’s instrument of choice is the accordion he also displays talent on bass, guitar and keys. Thanks to his parents and grandparents he sings traditional songs in original Creole French. He is a gifted composer and song-writer and his music and CDs feature many of his original tunes. As quoted from an article published in Eh Toi magazine 2002, “There is no accordion player in Zydeco that uses his left hand as well as Andre Thierry.”

While playing Washington, D.C. in 2003, the Washington Post called Andre “a master at pumping out fast, funky rhythms on an instrument not usually associated with earthy syncopation. A versatile student of the music, Thierry can’t be lumped into Zydeco’s old-school R&B-influenced camp or its nouveau, rap-inspired one: He and his band, Zydeco Magic, lay down both soulful, traditional slow-dances and bottom-end-booming kinetic groovers.”

In his 30’s, he has already been deemed a legend. There is widespread agreement that Andre Thierry is an exceptional multi-dimensional musician who has a finely-honed ability to merge his Accordion Soul sounds with blues, r&b, jazz, latin and rock. His musical mastery enables him to create a unique sound for his and future generations while staying true to the past.

Californian songstress Tiffany Joy and Colombian songsmith Maqui Reyes met in 2010 in Buenos Aires and decided to set their solo musical careers aside to form the dynamic Latin pop dúo “Individúo.” Since then, they have been performing on diverse stages in various countries. Their show mixes original repertoire with unique versions of some of the most celebrated hits ranging from Bossa Nova and Argentine Rock to Pop, Salsa, and even Colombian Cumbia.

The unique story of this duo transforms their music into something special, cosmopolitan - as eclectic and joyful as the two themselves. Singers, performers, and composers, these “Individúos” manage to translate their talent into songs that take the listener on a journey. The energy they generate on stage is a unique alchemy, a true experience for the viewer who can feel that something special vibrates wherever these two share their voices and souls.

In 2011 they teamed up with celebrated Latin music producer Oscar “El Chino” Asencio to produce their first six-song EP. In 2013 they toured in Bogotá, Colombia with their first single “Sueño”, a song that was widely accepted in Colombia, making it into the top 10 on various pop radio listings, along with its music video (filmed in San Francisco, CA), which was in rotation on various South American music video TV programs.

At the beginning of 2014 they returned to California for an extensive tour throughout the Bay Area, and filmed another video clip for their next single “Si Me Vieras tú” in the iconic San Francisco setting “Clarion Alley.”

In March of 2014 they returned to Colombia to engage in a press tour for the single “Si Me Vieras tú” – which lead to the offer of their own TV segment on the popular entertainment talk show “Bravíssimo.”

2014 ended on a high note for Individúo – they launched their third single “Tú-Yo” and performed at the renowned Astor Plaza Theatre (Opening for Dominican Singer/Songwriter Vicente García), as well as their own sold out show at the Hard Rock Café (Bogotá).

After another successful tour through northern California (USA) in Jan/Feb 2015, Individúo launched their first full length album "Sueño" with "Sold out" CD release shows in both Bogotá (Nov 2015) and San Francisco (Feb 2016).

Singer, Otilia Donaire came onto the California music scene in 2009, and has been tantalizing Bay Area audiences ever since. Otilia's powerful and gritty vocal style (reminiscent of rock and blues icons Janis Joplin and Koko Taylor) sings with raw depth and emotion, and has the adaptability to equally transition from a power driven rock song to a sultry, blues ballad in making her a crowd favorite. She is an exceptionally dynamic and versatile performer, who is as comfortable belting out hard core, down home blues standards as she is taking on vintage rock and soul classics.

Stan Erhart's roots go back to the Kansas City family farm, where hard work & play were accompanied by the pulse of John Deere tractors, V-8 cars, & country guitars -- plus the harmonica standards his Dad first wooed Mom with. Stan soon picked up his brother's baritone horn, followed by guitar, vocals, & woodwinds. Leaving Kansas City to return to school, he earned a music degree in Michigan while driving to nearby states for gigs & radio shows w/ the original progressive rock band he helped form. A subsequent move to Chicago allowed him to pursue a full schedule of private lessons & club work, while learning to deliver his 'signature stew' of R&B, Rock, & Blues. Finally relocating to San Francisco to strike out on his own, he formed one of the hardest working, well established bands in the Bay Area. They enjoy being part of the area's musical fabric & have a Grand Ole Time Dishin' Up ...

San Pedro Square Market Live Music - Week of Nov 28th

San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM for live performances in Downtown San Jose the week of November 28th, 2016 featuring: Michael James System, Wacky Blues Professors, Mirage Band, and Mitchell Lujan.

Michael James System: Thursday, Dec. 1st @ 7:00pm

a9a3ed7f-c3ea-4e65-9251-e0ee1467cc66-3.jpg

More recently, during the past few years, I have had the pleasure to perform with Greg Pane, as accomplished musician and composer known throughout the East Bay. Now, I’m pleased to be a part of the Michael James System along with James Kramer, who is also a very talented musician, who has terrific instincts and ability performing a variety of music on his 12 string guitar.

We became acquainted while working as Job Corps instructors on Treasure Island San Francisco Ca. I knew with James’ musical talent and 12 string guitar playing ability that we would make a great duo.

Wacky Blues Professors: Friday, Dec. 2nd @ 7:00pm

13939549_890007451099325_3420443013138697476_n.jpg

The beginnings of the band Wacky Blues Professors can be traced back to the year 2009, when Julijan Erič, a young blues rock guitarist and singer, met Miha Ribarič, who plays the bass guitar, and invited him to a jam session. Julijan and his high-school friend Zlatko Djogič, who plays the drums, had already been playing together in some bands, but at that time, they were looking for new musicians they could play and improvise with. Six months after their first meeting, Julijan, Miha and Zlatko began to regularly play and practice together. It was at that time that Julian’s brother, Miha Erič, an aspiring virtuoso on the harmonica despite his young age, joined the group as their newest member. Miha had already played with Julijan as a guest in previous ensembles. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix and old black blues artists, they slowly began to develop their own compositions. The main feature of their original music and various adaptations was improvisation, and this influence is still felt in their music today. Their first concert was held in 2009 at a small festival. Even though they did not have a fully completed repertoire, their concert was received with great enthusiasm, thus spawning new opportunities to play. They developed their own style, held as many concerts as possible and slowly made their way. The band was greeted with enthusiasm on almost every concert, for this type of music was not that common in Slovenia in those days, and on top of that, Miha spiced the music up with his energetic harmonica playing style, which made the listening experience even more magical. Zlatko catching thick-borne meningitis forced the group to take a break for a few months. When he got well, the Professors began to practice and play intensively. An important new feature of the band was introduced when Miha, the harmonica player, and Zlatko, the drummer, also took up songwriting and singing. Julijan was the only vocalist prior to this, and after this addition, the band gained two more very distinctive vocalists.
The name The Đipsiz (The Gypsies) was changed to The wacky professors of blues – the name that was previously used only as a slogan for a concert on the Academy of Fine Arts has now become the band's actual name. Being some sort of an eclectic consequence of different influences, their recognizable style was becoming more and more evident. Julijan’s major influences stem from the blues and rock tradition of the 60s, his brother Miha’s from blues and country music, Miha Ribarič’s from funk, rap and metal, and Zlatko’s from soul and rock and roll. But when these guys join forces, wonderful magic begins to unravel. The rhythm and energy they produce are so intense that the listener feels completely enchanted and mesmerized. In their own words, they often say that their music is a trance, some sort of meditation, which comes about through attentive listening and improvisation. The music is often dynamically brought to the climax, and when you get the feeling there is no more space left to lift the music even higher, they are able yet again to elevate it to unimaginable heights. Since 2013, they have been playing on practically every location in Slovenia, some places in Croatia and in Prague, Czech Republic. Their fanbase is growing rapidly and upon hearing them for the first time, one is immediately moved by the fullness of the sound. In 2016, they have recorded their first album titled Family. The keyboard player of the famous Yugoslavian band Buldožer, Borut Činč, was invited to participate in the making of Family that has 12 tracks, each one unique in terms of sound and style, which is a speciality of this album. Činč produced the album and his Hammond organ can be heard on 6 tracks. The album was published by the institute Zavod Orbita, established by Prismojeni profesorji bluesa and the versatile artist, Natalija Šepul. The album was very well received.

With their catchy dance tunes, smooth jazz vocals, and signature sound, The Mirage Band has solidified themselves as one of the Bay Area’s most sought after performers. Since 1985, they have won over fans and crowds with their high-energy sets, professionalism and undeniable talent. For over 18 years as the former resident band at the famed Tonga Room in San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel,it was quickly reinforced that The Mirage Band was more than just your ordinary cover band. With a set list that ranges from the golden oldies to today’s top 40, the band seamlessly moves from standard jazz, jazz fusion, disco, R&B, pop and rock as a lively five-piece band to a simple, sexy piano & vocalist duo crooning the standards.

Founder, William “Henry” Concepcion, lead vocalist Victoria “Marivic” and their team of experienced musicians and vocalists provide a musical chemistry that has captured the essence of all of the hits that you want to groove to – they get people on the dance floor and keep them there! The Mirage Band has become the go-to band for corporate events and private parties with a client list that includes Toshiba, Hertz, the World Series Gala and Cache Creek Casino and Resort, just to name a few. From intimate cocktail gatherings to full-blown music festivals, you can expect nothing less than an explosive performance from The Mirage Band.
