Anchored by frequent San Jose Jazz collaborator Oscar Pangilinan, The Bad Five is a modern jazz ensemble inspired by the entirety of jazz, from its birth in New Orleans to its adolescence in New York; all the way to its present-day form. Comprised of saxophonist Pagilinan and bassist Paclibon--with Daniel Matthews, trumpet; Bennett Roth-Newell, piano; and Sutton Marley, drums, the group pays homage to the jazz artists of generations past and actively infuses new and exciting sounds from other genres to create its own unique, modern sound. In the past, this group has performed at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2013 and KCSM's Jazz on the Hill.

San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Joins SPSM for a live performance with Sugar Sauce on Saturday, December 21st, 2013 @ 8:00pm

Reunited after three years of seperation, michael and brett are taking the stage together once again. it's not a new relationship for the two; having played tons of shows together in other bands, all the old flames are still flying, but this time with fresh fuel. with bobby on bass, the three are laying steady grooves for aching bodies and spilling hot lyrics for concious souls. embarking on their first tour together this summer, the three will come back and lay some brand new tunes in the studio together and have them out for you in the winter. stay tuned!!!

Funky groovy indie shoegaze that makes you dance, cry, fall in love and get your heart broken all at once. earthy drums, funky bass and spacy guitar with conscious lyrics and strong smooth vocals. straight grooves, swung grooves, tight grooves, nasty grooves that make love to your soul. sweet, sour, spicy, bitter, salty melodies that melt when they touch your tongue. wear whatever shoes you want. everyone will laugh.

BIO via the Good Times of Santa Cruz:

For Ben Lomond brothers Jamie and Kellen Coffis—the former, a 25-year-old keyboardist and singer, and the latter, a 21 year-old vocalist, guitarist and harmonica player—it’s not a matter of what life has to offer, but when they’ll get it. On “Love On My Side,” off of their debut album, they wonder, if “life is really just a battle with time, and I’m sick and tired of waiting in line, when will that arrow point at me?” Turns out they don’t need Cupid’s assistance, since locals have fallen fast for these budding folk rockers. The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men was released on June 17, after four days in Gadgetbox Recording Studio, with the help of producer Andy Zenczak and friends, The Mountain Men: bassist Mason Hutchinson, drummer Henry Chadwick, and guitarist Kyle Poppen. “We are all more than satisfied with the results because there is a nice mix of impatience and spontaneity on the record, which gives it a kind of personality,” says Jamie. That personality is present throughout the album, with heavy keyboarding and electric guitar complementing Kellen’s country-tinged vocals. Their easygoing disposition shines through too; Jamie admits they’re “pretty damn near 50/50 on songwriting … it kind of sounds like we could have written each other’s songs.” Perhaps the two are so in sync because they play soccer and beer pong together, plus share an affinity for Jackie Greene, Buddy Holly, Tom Petty, Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Live Music: Octobop Friday Dec. 6th @ 7pm

Octobop webSan Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM and San Jose Jazz for a live performance with Octobop on Friday, December 6th, 2013 @ 7pm

Octobop embodies the early days of West Coast Jazz when new ideas, harmonies, ensemble playing and great improvisation were the staples of a strong band. By performing and promoting the music that began with The Birth of the Cool -- and the  innovations of Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Dave Pell, Jimmy Guiffre, and Howard Rumsey among others—Octobop makes cool jazz hot once again. The group is comprised of eight multi-instrumentalists, Geoff Roach, Jack Conway, Matt Kesner, Randy Smith, Jon Schermer, Brian Brickhouse, Dave Casini, and Roddy Magallanes. Their third CD After Dark was number 35 on the national jazz charts at JazzWeek, and they have played at multiple festivals and events in California, including the San Jose Jazz Fest.

natalie cressman 400x200San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM and San Jose Jazz for a live performance with Natalie Cressman on Friday, November 29th, 2013 @ 7:00pm

Whether playing an original or exploring a jazz classic, trombonist and singer/songwriter Natalie Cressman fully embraces the imperative to render music in her own image. If you listen closely to Unfolding, her debut album with her band Secret Garden, she provides all the clues necessary to uncover the treasure trove of influences and inspirations behind her music: Cuban, Brazilian and West African music, indie rock, funk and the post-bop continuum.

While working with mentor Peter Apfelbaum, she was able to perform with Carlos Santana, Joe Lovano, Sheila E., Miguel Zenon, Ambrose Akinmusire and Eric Harland. She’s gained her widest exposure after touring for two years with Phish’s Trey Anastasio. As an educator, Cressman has taught at the Stanford Jazz Workshop and the Nueva School. She is a recent graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and is touring with her sophomore release, Turn the Sea.
