Live Music: Cado & Friends Flamenco / Brazilian Sat Dec 20 @ 8pm

10292524 792296717448663 3627210746692581680 n resized 600

San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM for a live performance with Cado & Friends Flamenco / Brazilian style music on Saturday, December 20th, 2014 @ 8:00pm in the Market Garage.

Cado brings Brazil with him wherever he plays. His passion for music crosses many genres and styles. Whether or not you understand the language of his songs, it is clear that he is a poet telling beautifully sculpted stories. Cado's voice is a juxtaposition of melodious balance and a rawness that convinces the listener he sings with conviction. His music might be hard to categorize solely because of his wide range of influences. Cado sings in three languages-- Portuguese, Spanish, and English. From rock, samba jazz, pop, soul, alternative to bossa nova, his music transcends barriers. His stage name comes from his sister, who couldn’t pronounce Ricado, and called him Cado. As a teenager, he embraced acts like Nirvana, Silverchair, etc. He moved from Brazil to Portugal at a young age, then him and his mom landed in San Jose, CA in 1992. Although he grew up listening to Brazilian music, he didn’t try to play it until he was 19. As an artist, he's been fortunate to meet some his core influences at local shows including Seu Jorge, Jamie Collum..... both equally excited about his enthusiasm and musicianship. At 21 he decided to give up electric guitar and steel strings and focus on acoustic with nylon strings. He has a way of breaking down the complexities of life in a way that is heartfelt and relatable.

Live Music: Funktopus Funk Band Saturday Dec 13th @ 8pm

San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM for a live performance with the Funktopus Funk Band on Saturday, December 13th, 2014 @ 8:00pm in the market garage.

The first echoes of Funktopus resonated from the wooden plank floors of Brian Vollbrecht's farm house in rural Petaluma, CA in September 2012. Slowly but surely, song material began to materialize from recurring weekend jam sessions between Brian (bass), Steven Ashlock (drums), Albert Shribbs (keys), and Connor Ross (guitar). After months of struggling to find a dependable female vocalist, fate (and Craig's List) brought Dee Torrent into the group as a lead vocalist who doubled on flute. The group began to gel, songs materialized more quickly, and a unique sound was created as a result of the musicians' diverse musical backgrounds and influences.

Finally, the time came to record a debut release. Just in the nick of time, Tito Granda was suction-cupped by the Funktopus to join the group as percussionist, contributing congas, tambourine, shakers, and all manner of noisemakers to the album. He immediately became a full-time band member, completing the six-person lineup. The band's self-titled EP was released on December 13, 2013, and the band played an intimate and high-energy first show at Sprenger's Taproom in Santa Rosa, CA the next day.

Blending elements of rock, reggae, psychedelia, jazz, and of course, FUNK, the band's sound continues to evolve.

Live Music: Mason Razavi Quartet Friday November 28th @ 7pm

mason razavi2 626x350 resized 600

San Pedro Square Market Live Music: Join SPSM and San Jose Jazz for a live performance with the Mason Razavi Quartet on Friday, November 28th, 2014 @ 7:00pm in the Market Garage.

The melding of rock beginnings with a devout love for classical guitar has formed the unique sound of Mason Razavi. Starting as a self-taught rock guitarist, Razavi devoted his life to the classical guitar after hearing the music of Andres Segovia at age 22. During this period Mason wrote all of the music that would form his jazz-influenced classical guitar album People, Places, and Monsters. He has since returned to jazz and the electric guitar, and his newest release Quartet Plus features originals from the perspective of a jazz quartet and nonet. Though first and foremost a jazz guitarist/composer, his diverse background has led him to play in a variety of settings ranging from rock bands to accompanying concert choirs, backing up jazz singers, and as a classical soloist. Mason holds a M.A. in Jazz Studies from San Jose State University and a B.M. from the Berklee College of Music where he studied jazz composition and majored in Contemporary Writing and Production, and  has performed at the Wilshire Ebell Theater, Paradise Rock Club, and on stage at the San Jose Repertory Theater as well as countless gigs as a sideman and leader of his own groups.
