History San José invites you to a conversation with professor Arturo Villareal as he discusses his book—José Manuel Gonzalez: Apache Alcalde/Mayor of San José, California. Villareal will correct the historical record of this important, but often overlook, historical figure. He will explore how Gonzalez, an Apache, came to be a part of the De Anza expedition, the second mayor of the city, and the very first mayor to serve a full four-year term. For much of San Jose’s history, Gonzalez has been recognized as the Peralta Adobe's builder, but not as its first resident. Villareal’s analysis is a unique contribution to local history and an overdue reexamination of San Jose's founding story.
Tickets to this great online event are available through Eventbrite. José Manuel Gonzalez: Apache Alcalde/Mayor of San José, California can be purchased from Amazon.com.
