Risotto- It's not just for mushrooms anymore!

Risotto San pedro Square Market downtown San Jose farmers market resized 600

One of the things I love most about risotto is how it makes a great meal no matter what time of the year. In the fall and winter you can load it full of hearty meats, chunks of carrots or parsnips for a warm meal on a chilly day. In the spring and summer it takes well to a lighter side, and is wonderful when you add spring or summer vegetables, roasted chicken, grilled salmon and fresh herbs. Both Veggie Box and the Farmer’s Market have a great selection of tasty items you can add to your risotto recipe. You can even serve it cold in a salad and add with a touch of color with some saffron. You will find that risotto is a blank canvas for any kind of add-ins. and whether it’s mixed with meat, fish, or vegetables, risotto doubles as a sophisticated recipe and mouth-watering, comfort food.

The great thing about risotto is it’s not difficult to make at all and there are so many variations. Just use your imagination and you can have a delicious meal in very little time.

Making Risotto requires your full attention for about 20 minutes while you stir warm broth into the rice until the starch in the rice breaks down and it gets really creamy. Get through that 20 minutes and master the basic technique then Voila! You have the start to an incredible meal. Enjoy! San Pedro Square Market.

Great Article about Blush Raw Bar on MetroActive!

Blush Raw Bar Brings a New Kind of Cool to San Pedro Square Market

When Blush Raw Bar owners Russ Fukushima and Taylor Kim decided to start a nightclub in San Jose, they toured the country from San Diego to Las Vegas to Miami and back. They discovered all kinds of niche trends that hadn’t yet made it to the South Bay yet, but the one that really clicked with them was frozen, blended cocktails. If they could come up with their own version in San Jose, they reasoned, they could engineer their own kind of cool.

“We wanted to do a spin on that, and have a sexy, elegant cocktail,” says Fukushima.

So they’ve spent the last two years experimenting with recipes, taking their slushie pursuit to obsessive levels.

“We actually had one of the machines in one of our homes,” he says. “It was a good time.”

All that cold-case work resulted in the Blush, the signature cocktail that has been part of their menu of slush drinks since the Blush Raw Bar Lounge opened in San Pedro Square Market in April.

“It’s going off like wildfire,” says Fukushima.

But it’s not just chemistry behind the Blush approach. There’s a philosophical aspect as well, believe it or not. A frozen drink can’t be downed like a shot—though Blush does have a full bar in addition to its specialty menu, the slow-acting slushes take the emphasis away from the wham-bam-thank-you-barman approach to imbibing and suggest a longer, more relaxed vibe.

“The cocktail creates a different experience,” says Fukushima. “We don’t want to be a nightclub. We consider ourselves a lounge. We want to present a comfortable, come-as-you-are atmosphere.”

Similarly, they brought a different approach to their menu. “We wanted to bring a raw concept here. Not just sushi, not just oysters. Everything is based on raw protein,” he says.

The industrial, ultramodern look of Blush ties the owners’ conceptual threads together. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that Kim and Fukushima were able to make their ideas work together—they’ve been best friends since growing up together in Hawaii. They’d talked about doing a place together for years, but the idea started to seem a lot more realistic when Kim moved down to Northern California from Seattle.

“It got the point where we were just having beers and said ‘Why are we talking? Let’s just do it,’” remembers Fukushima, who went into the project with a decade’s experience in the restaurant business.

Expansion and franchising could be in their future, but for now, they’re just happy to see the response Blush has had so far.

“We’ve got a buzz going on,” he says. “San Jose needed something like this. It’s classy. It’s refreshing.”

Sort of like an ice-cold drink.

San Jose Restaurants: Sama Zama is Coming!

San Pedro Square Market is about to add another great restraurant. We’ve told you a little bit about Shawn Mckenna’s fresh and innovative concept, but now we are happy to say that Sama- Zama will be joining us at the Market! The lunch service will focus on healthy salads, soups and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread. Soups are his specialty, so you know those will be delicious! The best part is that the basic stocks will be made ahead of time, but all of the vegetables and proteins will be cooked to order. Isn’t that how it should be? And here it will be! For dinner, Shawn will utilize the techinques he has honed in 12+ years of cooking professionally to produce an ever-changing array of tapas-style small plates. Take a look at this video Shawn has put together to give you a better idea of what he has in store for us.

Sama-Zama will begin construction shortly. It will be located in the El Dorado Building across from Pizza Bocca Lupo.

BLUSH Raw Bar and Lounge opens at San Pedro Square Market

Blush Raw Bar and Lounge in downtown San JoseBlush Raw Bar and Lounge, at San Pedro Square Market, is the newest place to dine in San Jose.

This restaraunt is an amazing new raw food bar lounge with one-of-a-kind cocktails, small plates with fresh ingredients, sushi and oysters.

Blush is located in San Pedro Square Market and has a come-as-you-are, relaxed and contemporary atmosphere. An excellent place which provides people an opportunity to socialize with live music, food, cocktails and exceptional service.

Blush has very a distinct vibe. The dining area has small four-person tables that surround the sushi bar. Adjacent to the open dining section is the main bar. This area has a industrial feeling to it, with a high ceiling, exposed metal girders that is illuminated with hanging lanterns.
You can also dine and enjoy one of Blush's many unique cocktails in the outdoor plaza of San Pedro Square Market. This is great if you are a sports fan because the Market has a large projection screen for you to watch your favorite sporting event.

Last-minute Valentines Day Ideas

Lets step out of the box for a minute. Let’s not do the normal candy, roses, balloons thing. Lets get creative, personal and most importantly as easy as we can this year! The best ideas and gifts are the ones you make yourself and sometime tend to even be the cheapest ones to give!

10 Simple and Great Ideas:

1. An incredibly nice and thoughtful gesture is to write a letter or a poem. You don’t have to be a poet either! Just write down how you feel about the person, how important they are to you. I bet this is way better than a box a chocolates (or at least a close second).

2. Along the lines of a letter is filling a jar with little love notes.

3. Suggest cooking a meal together! Could be a favorite food for both or a new one you can explore together.

4.Walk around a favorite part of town, stopping at a nice local bar for a glass of wine and appetizers. (Perhaps Vino Vino!)

describe the image

5. Plan a scavenger hunt sending your valentine all around town while you get dinner ready! This might take some time, but your valentine will appreciate the time you put into this idea.

6. Buy them 1 of their favorite flower. Doesn’t need to be an entire bouquet, the important part is to remember which is their favorite.

7. Make a mixed CD of your favorite songs that remind you of that person. Include why you picked those tracks.

8. Pack a lunch and go to the park for a picnic! Lets take it back to our childhood and go swing on the swings.

9. Let the person know you are thinking about them, send email, text, voicemails, and even a letter in the snail mail! Your valentine will know how much you are thinking about them and care.

10. Take your Valentine to San Pedro Square Market! Enjoy good music, food, drinks, and simply enjoy the company of one another.

Here is a rundown of the special offers the Market Tenants will be offering tomorrow night:

Vino Vino is offering 25% off wine pours for ladies
Pizza Bocca Lupo is offering 15% off all desserts
Little Chef Counter is offering a 3-course prix fixe: House Salad, Pan-roasted Salmon, and White Chocolate Bread Pudding for $24/person from 5pm-close.

Bad Ideas: Don’t forget! As much as your valentine might say they really don’t care what you do if anything at all, which might be true, still take the time to let that person verbally know how important you are to them. Valentines day or not, this is not a bad idea. Also, don’t do something that you know your valentine doesn’t care for. Try to be considerate even with the minor details. There might be a Sharks game on that night, or a new Glee on, but lets try to think of the other person for a change guys!

Dishcrawl heads back to San Pedro Square for Round Three

The team at Dishcrawl has absolutely taken the foodie scene to another level in San Jose. Founder Tracy Lee will be heading the third visit to San Pedro Square. This time Dishcrawl will kick off their event at the beautiful Axis Condo tower, where you can find the delicious Empanadas from The Mmoon.  After Axis, crawlers will be visiting Peggy Sue’s, a family friendly 50’s style dinner, in San Pedro Square. Also, part of the crawl will be the amazing Food Truck MoBowl.

Tracy is no stranger to San Pedro Square, the first Dishcrawl she held in Downtown San Jose brought over 85 people to The Mmoon Empanadas, a visit that owner Mike Mendez said “Was an amazing way to meet new patrons on a personal level”. Tracy’s second visit brought clients to La Piñata, Satori Tea, and a cameo by another popular food truck Tikka Bytes.

Dishcrawl is more that just a foodie event. It’s a community builder. It takes the foodie culture and infuses it with an easy way for local businesses to meet their clientele. Many times the patrons who come on the crawls would not get to meet the owners of a neighborhood restaurant. If you have not heard of Dishcrawl yet, chances are there is already one set up in your neighborhood. We will see everybody down in San Pedro Square next Sunday May 29th, 2011.

SJEats is back…. And with added seating…

Back because of massive popular demand, SJEatsis coming back for their second festival on May 7th, 2011. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience at the first SJEats event on April 2. We read your tweets and your Facebook posts and we have responded with more space for the trucks, better line management, more trucks and even a sneak peek of the new San Pedro Square Market.

Video lisayamani's Channel

We know the event area was far too small on April 2, so we have upgraded our footprint from 12,000 square feet to more than 50,000 square feet. We will be closing West St. John Street between North San Pedro Street and North Almaden Avenue, and will have the food trucks neatly lined up on West St. John.  In order to help with line management, we have enrolled an army of volunteers to help guests understand where the various lines end----and we will be opening the beautiful Peralta Adobe Plaza for added seating and dining.

The event will take place from 11:30AM until 3:30PM and from 5:00PM until 9:00PM.  The lunch session will include Babaloo, Iz It, The Wow truck, and many others. The evening session includes Curry Up Now, Senior Sisig and many more amazing food trucks.

SJEats hopes to be the number one destination for new food trucks to be put on display. We can’t wait to see all of you here on May 7th. San Pedro Square Market Manager Steve Borkenhagen will be on site all day and he will be giving tours of the Market to potential tenants, so feel free to talk with him about all of the exciting potential here at the San Pedro Square Market.San pedro square food trucks san jose custom food trucks resized
